The doctoral study in Applied Marine Sciences is based on interdisciplinary research of the marine and
coastal environment, building upon fundamental knowledge in natural and biotechnical marine sciences
and expanding it with expertise from specific fields essential for the development of sustainable
management and protection of the Adriatic Sea. The holder of the doctoral program is the University of
Split, while the implementing institutions are the University of Split and the University of Dubrovnik,
specifically the Faculty of Marine Sciences of the University of Split and the Department of Applied
Ecology of the University of Dubrovnik.

The program is structured in accordance with contemporary European standards of doctoral education,
including individualized mentorship, research work, and the development of generic and transferable
skills. The program also encourages doctoral candidates to participate in ongoing research projects and
collaborate with relevant scientific institutions.
The doctoral study in Applied Marine Sciences lasts three years, i.e. six semesters, and requires the
completion of at least 180 ECTS credits. Upon completion of the study, students are awarded the
academic degree of Doctor of Science in the field of Biotechnical Sciences (PhD).
