The sea is a significant resource of every maritime country that can contribute to the economic well-being of the country and the standard of living of its citizens in various ways, such as the exploitation of living and non-living resources, the cultivation of organisms, tourism and maritime affairs. Some of the listed activities are not compatible and can harm each other. Therefore, in the development strategy of a country that is oriented towards the sea, experts who will know how to exploit the sea in a sustainable way for the benefit of people and marine ecosystems are necessary. The undergraduate study program in Marine Biology and Technology educates highly qualified personnel trained to work in the issues of biology, ecology and marine protection, as well as marine fisheries, which is in line with the maritime, or Adriatic, orientation of the Republic of Croatia. Personnel who are educated in this undergraduate university study can play a significant role in state, county, city and municipal administration bodies dealing with issues of environmental protection and conservation and marine fisheries, in chambers of commerce and trade, in inspection services in fisheries inspection, and in companies engaged in the catching, breeding, processing and trade of fish and other marine organisms, their preservation from spoilage, and the management and protection of living marine resources. All of the above indicates a high justification for conducting the study with regard to the needs of the labor market. The knowledge acquired in this undergraduate study can also be of importance for a number of other activities such as scientific work, construction, industry, urbanism, spatial planning and energy. The study lasts three years, and by passing all exams prescribed by the study program and defending the final thesis, or by acquiring 180 ECTS credits, the student acquires the academic title of Bachelor of Science (baccalaureus/baccalaurea) in Marine Biology and Technology.
