Marine Fishery

Reasons for starting the study programme

Marine fishery is a complex economic activity which is not only subjected to the influence of various biotic and abiotic components that affect its functioning and determine its development. Proper management and protection of renewable resources implies taking into account biotechnological, technical, economic, legal and many other aspects. Therefore, when it comes to proper and responsible management and protection of renewable marine resources, development of fishing activities, farming, preservation, processing and trading of fish and other marine organisms, education is essential for successful management of all fishery activities. This type of education is possible at the graduate study of Marine Fishery, which educates highly qualified staff trained to work in the field of marine fisheries.

The graduate study of Marine Fishery aims to cover the following issues: methods and activities related to fishing, farming, processing and trading of fish and other marine organisms, as well as methods and management activities, protection and exploitation of marine living resources.

The staff trained in this graduate university study can play a prominent role in bodies of state, county, city and municipal administration involved in the marine fishery sector, as well as in the Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Trades and Crafts and inspection services in the affairs of fishery inspection and in companies engaged in fishing, farming, processing and trading of fish and other marine organisms, their preservation, management and protection of marine living resources. Regarding this and labour market needs, implementation of this study programme is, thus, highly justified.

Relationship with the local community (economy, entrepreneurship, civil society, etc.)

Acquired knowledge and skills at the graduate study of Marine Fishery derives from a curriculum designed to train students for any type of job in the field of marine fisheries. At the graduate level, theory and practice are combined to help students develop working techniques and to engage in practice and pursue carrier in marine fishery (students are introduced to practical work methods, problems and solutions, they listen lectures from scientists and professionals, meet potential employers, talk to scientists and experts about the latest insights, thereby acquiring competences for future employment).

Compatibility with requirements of professional organizations

The graduate study programme is based on contemporary scientific findings from the field of ichthyology, integrated coastal zone management, exploitation, management and protection of marine living resources, use of fishing gear, vessels and ports, mariculture, fish processing technology and preservation of marine products, trade of fish and other marine organisms, as well as legislation on marine fisheries.

Possible partners outside the higher education system that expressed interest in the study programme

Graduate study of Marine Fishery enables furthering of professional and scientific knowledge acquired at undergraduate studies, thereby being its logical continuation. That is why potential partners outside the higher education system are numerous bodies of state, county, city and municipal administration dealing with marine fisheries, Chamber of Commerce and Chamber of Trades and Crafts, inspection services that check and verify the application of the rules of marine fisheries policy, protection of the sea and its living resources, companies dealing with fishing, farming, processing and trade of fish and other marine organisms, their preservation, management and protection, and also scientific organizations engaged in the exploration of the sea and its living resources
